Baldwin Park is a New Urbanist community with an unusual advantage — rather than being built from scratch in some abandoned pasture, it sprung up inside the already vibrant Orlando city limits. When the Navy abandoned its training facility, planners took the acreage to build single-family homes, townhomes, and apartments, and placed them along wide streets running through parks and open space. There’s a downtown with a grocery and pharmacy, small boutiques and salons, as well as some of the city’s best restaurants, and other small businesses and professional offices are scattered throughout the area. Orlandoans venture to Baldwin Park for the recreation, as well, primarily biking and jogging on the wide park-lined trail around Lake Baldwin or along the Cady Way Trail. With an emphasis on aesthetics, Baldwin’s planners pushed the parking to the interiors of the blocks to give that space to blossoming flowers and trees, and they’ve also hidden away massive resort-style pools areas and other luxury amenities.
