Midwood Commerce & Culture
Though Midwood’s food scene tends to be more low-key than other parts of Brooklyn, there are nonetheless gems tucked away on the neighborhood’s streets and lettered avenues. Head across Avenue J to uncover delightful delis and pizza of city-wide renown. Avenue M expands on those offerings, adding falafel, sushi, and ice cream to the mix, among others. Tree-lined Ocean Parkway — designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux of Central and Prospect Park fame — slices down the western third of Midwood. The country’s first bike path was built on this historic thoroughfare in 1894, which today provides a swift trip down to the ocean and attractions at Coney Island and Brighton Beach. Marine Park is also mere minutes outside Midwood’s borders — Brooklyn’s largest park boasts a golf course, hiking trails, fields for baseball and cricket, and over 500 acres of protected grassland and salt marsh.
